Will-o'-the-wisp, where's that wrinkle in time?

Thoughts Near Midnight

Close your eyes and listen. Open your ears and listen close. What do you hear?

If you live in a busy city, even at this late hour you could still probably hear the bustle of the streets, cars going to and fro, drivers running red lights. Closer still you could hear that unmistakable hum of power coursing through electronics. Much closer and there is perhaps the different sounds from the computer.

If you’re in the gentle country, there is all but the quite of the night. There is the profound stillness of the night that envelopes you and lets a calm settle in however troubled a heart you might have. The tranquil lulls you to sleep yet invites you to simply be still and listen.

A deep serenity that makes you wish in your heart of hearts that the world could be so peaceful. Sometimes it can become so deep that only the occasional bark of the dog, the chirp of the insect, the call of the bird would remind you that the world is still out there. The ticking of the clock is there, too, telling you that the world has not stopped.

But that’s exactly what you would wish for. For the world to stop, pause and take a break if only so you could take in the moment. A moment of respite from what remains out there.

Winter snow is falling down, children laughing all around
Lights are turning on, like a fairy tale come true

Snow, lights and laughter. It’s not maybe as quite but it could be just as peaceful. Perfectly beautiful.

Nights like this, the world so still, sweet melodies floating in the air, have become rather rare for me. I’ve only been speeding through and forgotten about the view. It was only tonight that for some reason, for which I could only be grateful for, I remained awake until this hour and such songs played.

Indeed, the world we live in is magnificent. It is filled with beauty and grandeur. Some of this are perhaps hidden. Others still might have been, by the works of man, destroyed. Nevertheless, it is out there. All is not lost. We live in a beautiful world and we have so much to be thankful for.

I thank you for the music and your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough
And, Papa, I don’t think I said “I love you” near enough

We have the Sun that rises every morning for us to give us the light of day. To nourish every living being that creeps, crawls, walks, swims, flies on the face of the Earth. When the time comes, the sun happily gives way for the Moon to glow and the Stars to shine.

The rain falls and the Earth is revived. The snow descends and the land transitions into the pureness of white. The waves beat against the shore as the tides rise and fall.

There is so much out there and for every bit of what remains, we can only ever be so grateful. We can only ever be so protective. For if we can’t, what would be there left to listen to?

The rain has stopped, the storm has passed
Look at all the colours now the sun’s here at last

It is beautiful.
